Who Are Starbucks’ Main Competitors? Starbucks was established in Seattle in 1971; the company operates in 83 different countries with a total of 33,669. In comparison to its main competitors, Starbucks' sales are sky high. The American coffee giant Starbuck Corporation has locations all over the world. Its doors first opened in 1971. In 2016, Starbucks averaged 240,000 workers across the globe. A total of $12.5 billion was accounted for, with an operating profit of $2.80 billion. Known for its exceptional cafeteria coffee, outstanding customer service, and most delectable espresso, Starbucks has become an icon of the "second wave coffee" movement.
A total of 165 outlets in that country directly result from Schultz's growth strategy. During its initial public offering in 1992, the firm opened more than a thousand outlets, including those in Japan and Singapore. A year later, it had almost 2,000 workers on staff. This conglomerate has expanded to 28,000 stores in 76 different countries. Currently holding a 39.8 percent share of the U.S. coffee industry, the firm is far and away the leader. With a value of $44.5 billion, it is the second most valuable fast food brand in the world, after McDonald's. Starbucks, Dunkin' Donuts, and McDonald's have been competing for the title of "world's best coffee" for quite some time.
Dunkin' Donuts, another American coffee behemoth, is Starbucks' main competitor in the United States, Canada, and a few other markets. The company was established in 1950 in Quincy, Massachusetts, and it maintains an atmosphere that is decidedly more working-class than that of Starbucks. Dunkin' Donuts is the fourth largest coffee chain in the world, with over 12,900 outlets in 42 countries. Its competitor, Dunkin' Donuts, has taken the opposite approach to expansion, relying nearly exclusively on franchisees to open stores across the United States. Despite this, Dunkin' Donuts' sales in 2019 were $1.37 billion, compared to $23.5 billion for Starbucks in 2020.
McDonald's has a coffee shop called the McCafé that competes with Starbucks. The first Australian McCafe opened in 1993, and there are now more than 15,000 across the globe. McCafé is a coffee shop in McDonald's restaurants that serves espresso coffee and coffee-based beverages in addition to the regular McDonald's menu.
Costa Coffee, which has more than 3,800 stores in 32 countries, is the largest coffee chain in the United Kingdom. Costa Coffee is the world's second-largest coffee chain, behind only Starbucks. Costa Coffee was established in London in 1971 by two Italian brothers, Bruno and Sergio Costa. At first, they, too, supplied roasted coffee beans to other merchants, just like Starbucks. There are a variety of coffees, hot and cold drinks, snacks (both sweet and savoury), sandwiches, and seasonal festive drinks available at Costa Coffee right now. Costa Coffee is Starbucks' main competitor outside the United States. However, it does not have any stores in the United States.
Cafe Nero, the largest coffee chain in Europe, now has more than a thousand stores in 11 countries spanning Europe and Asia. Cafe Nero serves hot and iced coffees, pastries, breakfast sandwiches (served all day), fruit juices, and smoothies. In addition, the menu items typically reflect the tastes of the locals.
Cafe Ritazza, another coffee chain with a London outpost, boasts "excellent coffee on the go" in its advertising. Airports, train stations, retail malls, university campuses, and hospitals are just some of the places you may find Cafe Ritazza serving up food and drink in 30 different countries.
The company sells a variety of snacks, sandwiches, pastries, and alcoholic beverages. The design takes primarily from cafes in Italy. While Cafe Ritazza battles head-on with Starbucks in many markets, they do so on a much smaller scale.
Cafe Coffee Day is an Indian chain with 500 locations across the country. It grows its coffee on plantations in South India to provide a steady supply of high-quality beans for its stores. Among the many classic coffee drinks are lattes, espresso, cappuccinos, and South Indian filter coffee. Cafe Coffee Day also serves a wide selection of meals, such as burgers, sandwiches, rice dishes, and classic sweets.
Coffee Republic began in the U.K. and is now a global chain with 128 locations. The brand was established in 1995 by Bobby and Sahar Hashemi, brothers and sisters. Coffees, hot and cold beverages, healthy sandwiches, salads, and baked goods are all available.
Even though it is widely acknowledged that Starbucks is the market leader for coffee in the world, the corporation confronts stiff competition in many regions. The closest competitors in the United States are Dunkin' Donuts and McCafe. However, they remain well behind in terms of market share. In addition, coffee shops in the United Kingdom, Canada, Europe, and India compete with Starbucks in their domestic markets.

The Seattle-based Starbucks Corporation opened its first store in 1971 and has since expanded to become the world's largest network of coffeehouses. Over 33,000 outlets (both owned and licenced) are already in operation for the brand, and they plan to increase that number to 55,000 by the year 2030. The United States is Starbucks' largest market, with 15,000 outlets, followed by China, where the business expects to open 6,000 locations.
